Building A Better & Brighter Future

Westhampton Beach High School students participate in the FIRST Robotics program, yielding unique friendships, educational opportunities, and technical experiences.

This is our goal

Our team designs, programs, and builds a robot engineered to tackle the tasks of a new game every year and does so in the exciting and incredibly challenging timeframe of just six weeks! Starting with regional competitions we compete against approximately 8,000 teams from around the world involving almost a half-million students in total.

A Leader In The Robotics Community

Team 3171, was founded in 2009 by just a few high school students. Since then, our student-run team has grown exponentially and distinguished itself across the nation and the world. Our coach, Tony Kryl, a 2016 Woodie Flowers award recipient, led our team to the 2013 & 2015 World Championships in St. Louis, the 2018 World Championship in Detroit, and the 2022 World Championship in Houston. FIRST, an international organization founded by Dean Kamen, preaches gracious professionalism, teamwork, and cooperation.

Why Robotics?

To inspire students to be science and technology leaders

The team participates in a competition held by FIRST, a program developed in 1989 to inspire more interest and exposure to the fields of science and technology.  Our team designs, programs, and builds a robot that performs an annually assigned task – all in six weeks.  We compete against teams from 25 countries comprised of over 460,000 students.  The process of building and designing the robot is not an easy one.  It has expenses and must be completed within 6 weeks – which flies by fast.  The journey from the first kit of parts and the first blank sheet on the drawing board to the completed robot takes a lot of support.  The kit is only the beginning.  A winning robot requires game strategy, programming, engineering, and manufacturing.  Thanks to the guidance of our award-winning coach TONY KRYL we have built robots that have qualified us for the World Championships in 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2022.  Our team needs financial support and mentors with training and experience in computer programming and mechanical design.  We are also fortunate to have benefited from product donations and discounts in the past.  Anything you can do to help us continue shaping the lives of our students would be appreciated!
